Breeders Cup History

The Breeders Cup was first run in 1982 and according to some is the US equivalent of the Grand National, the UK Derby, the Irish Derby, the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe, the Melbourne Cup the Dubai World Cup and Royal Ascot all rolled into one.

The Breeders Cup features fourteen classic races, including eight Grade One races and is held in Santa Anita, Arcadia, California. Because of the number of races, the meeting is held across two days with the 2nd day holding five of the Grade One races, with a total of $17.5 million on offer in prizes.

The Breeders Cup Classic is held on day two of the meeting and is the race that every breeder who has had the good fortune to get to this point in the proceedings is holding out for. And why wouldn’t they? The race has a grand prize of $2million for the winner, and presently leading the betting is Rip Van Winkle, trained by Aiden O Brien, which would be a huge high for the end of his racing career. Next on the betting odds is Zenyatta.

The Breeders Cup Turf race is open to fillies, mares, colts and geldings aged three years or over. Currently leading the bets for this race is Sir Michael Stoute’s Conduit, but he faces tought competition from horses such as Spanish Moon and Dar Re Mi.

The Breeders Cup Mile is also a race for three years and above fillies, mares, colts and geldings. This race is over a mile and it is thought that last year’s winners Goldikova could win it again this year following a good season.

The Breeders Cup Sprint is again for three years and above fillies, mares, colts and geldings and is six furlongs run over dirt, and the odds are stacked for Zensational who has won this three last races.

The Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf is occurring for just the third time this year and Interactif is the main contender.

The Breeders Cup Marathon is the first race on the 2nd day of the meeting, with Mastery, owned by Godolphin the favourite at present.

The Breeders Cup Turf is to be held for the second time this year, which holds a prize of $1million. Desert Code won the race last year at odds of 40/1and has much shorter odds this year!

The Breeders Cup Dirt Mile also has a prize of $1million and is a race that has been dominated by the Americans in the past.

The Breeders Cup Juvenile is a race for two year old colts and geldings, and is a dirt track of one and one sixth miles.
The Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint was won last year by Ventura who looks set to win again this year, while the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf race is only in its second year and is contested for by majority US trained horses. The Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies is a race for two year old fillies and is raced on a dirt track of one and one sixth miles

The Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf is a race for three year old and above fillies and mares. The Breeders Cup Filly and Mare is raced on the turf track at one and one fourth mile and all the best fillies have entries at the moment, and dual Oaks winner Sariska is a hot contender.

The Breeders Cup Ladies Classic, also known as the Distaff, was won by Zenyatta last year, and she is looking likely to win again this year. Tim Robbins, America’s senior handicapper is predicting great things for her, saying that she is, in his opinion going to beat Rip van Winkle in the Breeders Cup Classic, even though it would be her first time against males.

Bookmaker Paddy Power are offering all new users to their sportsbook site a free bet on any Breeders Cup race or races over the two days of the meeting.
